Snoring Is Not Always Cute: Breathing Signs in Flat-Faced Dogs

Pugs, French Bulldogs, and English Bulldogs may snore or breathe noisily because of the shape of their airways. But “that is normal for the breed” should not be used to dismiss signs of difficulty.

Pay attention if your dog breathes loudly while resting, wakes often during sleep, struggles to keep up on walks, takes a long time to recover, gags when eating or drinking, or overheats in mild weather. Extra weight, heat, and humidity can make breathing problems worse.

Keep your dog at a healthy weight and avoid strenuous activity during hot or humid periods. A well-fitted harness is usually a better choice than putting pressure on the neck.

Blue or grey gums or tongue, fainting, open-mouth breathing that does not settle, or obvious effort to breathe are emergencies. Move your dog to a cool area and seek veterinary care immediately.

Noisy breathing may be common in some flat-faced dogs, but comfortable breathing should not be treated as optional. If your dog’s breathing has changed or seems harder than before, arrange a veterinary examination.
