Cat Disappears When Guests Arrive? Hiding Can Be a Healthy Choice
When visitors arrive, many cats feel safer watching from a distance or hiding completely. Instead of bringing them out to meet everyone, give them a quiet place where they can choose when, or if, to reappear.

The doorbell rings, and your cat vanishes under the bed. That is not rude behaviour. For some cats, hiding is how they handle noise, unfamiliar voices, and changes at home.
Before guests arrive, set up a calm retreat. A quiet room, covered bed, open carrier, or high perch can all work well. Make sure your cat can access water, a litter tray, and familiar bedding, then ask visitors to leave that area alone.
Avoid reaching into their hiding place, carrying them out for introductions, or following them with a camera. Being given a choice is often what helps a nervous cat feel safe.
If your cat comes out, let them take their time. Guests can sit quietly, turn slightly sideways, and avoid staring. Placing a treat nearby can create a positive association, but do not use it to coax your cat closer than they want to be.
Some cats may watch from the hallway. Others may stay hidden until the house is quiet again. Both are okay.
Pay attention if hiding becomes a sudden new habit, happens much more often than usual, or comes with reduced appetite, litter tray changes, or signs of pain. In those cases, speak with your veterinarian, as hiding can sometimes be linked to illness as well as stress.
