Bought a Scratcher but Your Cat Still Prefers the Sofa?

Scratching is a normal part of being a cat. It helps remove old claw layers, stretch muscles, leave scent and visual marks, and release emotion. The goal is not to stop your cat from scratching, but to give them an option they like better than the sofa.

Bought a Scratcher but Your Cat Still Prefers the Sofa?

Cats can be very particular about how they scratch. Some prefer to stretch up against a vertical post, while others choose flat cardboard or an angled surface. Start with both vertical and horizontal scratchers, then see which one your cat returns to most often.

If you choose a vertical scratcher, make sure it is tall enough for your cat to fully stretch their front legs and back. It also needs a stable base. A scratcher that wobbles or falls over may put your cat off after one try.

Texture matters too. Corrugated cardboard, sisal, and fabric are common options, but every cat has their own preference. Try placing the scratcher beside the furniture they already scratch, near their favourite post-nap stretching spot, or along a route they often use around the house.

To help them warm up to it, use a toy to guide their attention, add a small amount of catnip, or reward them right after they use the scratcher on their own. Avoid taking their paws and rubbing them against the scratcher. That can make the experience feel uncomfortable and create a negative association.

Once you find the right angle, texture, and location, your cat may finally decide the scratcher is a better choice than the sofa. Share what worked for your cat in the HAPI community and help other cat parents find their cat’s perfect scratch spot.
