How to Clean Your Dog's Paws After a Walk
A quick paw check after a walk helps keep dirt outside and lets you spot small problems early. Clean only as much as needed, then dry well, especially between the toes.

A paw-cleaning routine does not need to be complicated. The main goal is to remove anything your dog may have picked up outside and check that their paws feel comfortable.
Start with a quick check
Look at the paw pads, nails, and spaces between the toes. Watch for mud, small stones, grass seeds, ticks, cuts, or redness.
If your dog suddenly pulls their paw away or seems uncomfortable, stop and take a closer look.
Choose the simplest clean that works
For light dust, use a clean damp cloth.
For mud, dirty water, or visible grime, rinse the paws with clean water.
If your dog has stepped in an unknown substance, rinse the paws well and prevent them from licking. Contact a veterinarian promptly if you think it could be harmful.
Most dogs do not need a strong cleanser after every walk. If you use one, choose a mild product made for pets. Avoid human wipes with alcohol, strong fragrance, or harsh disinfectants, as these may irritate the skin.
Do not skip drying
Gently dry the pads and the spaces between the toes. Damp fur and skin can become uncomfortable, particularly if moisture stays trapped there.
When cleaning is not enough
Book a vet check if your dog keeps licking their paws, starts limping, develops a strong smell, or has obvious redness, swelling, discharge, or a wound between the toes.
A one-minute paw check after each walk can become an easy routine for both of you, and it may help you notice a problem before it gets worse.
