Turn One Meal into a Small Challenge with Puzzle Feeding

A bowl is convenient, but some cats enjoy working for their food. A puzzle feeder turns part of a meal into a simple activity that lets them use their nose and paws.

Start with an easy design and keep the food visible. You can try a clean egg carton, cardboard box, folded paper tube, or beginner-friendly puzzle feeder.

If your cat walks away, the puzzle may be too difficult. Make it easier or place a few pieces of food nearby to show them how it works. Once your cat understands the idea, you can gradually increase the challenge.

Puzzle feeding is not an extra meal. Use part of your cat’s normal daily food allowance, and continue offering some food in a bowl while they learn.

In a multi-cat home, set up separate feeding areas so one cat cannot take control of the puzzle. Cats with dental, joint, or vision problems may also need larger openings and an easier design.

The goal is to create interest, not frustration. If your cat enjoys the challenge, mealtime can become a little more engaging, one piece at a time.
